Stay classy San Diego

Talk about a guy hitting the lottery: perennial September call-up candidate and Sox outfield fifth-wheel David Murphy was brought up from Pawtucket to take the spot vacated by Curt Schilling’s DL stint. And, while he’ll probably spend more time sitting on the pine, and the john, then he will on the field, at least Murphy picked a nice location to jet off to. I mean, is there a better city than San Diego to drop in on for a long weekend? Sun, beaches, good pitching match-ups. And just think: Murphy will be able to take it all in while sitting in one of the best seats in the house: right next to Julian “Big Lebowski” Tavarez on the bench.

But fret not, Sox fans, the former Baylor slugger with either a slight lisp or constant wad of chaw in his cheek won’t be up for long. All indications are that he’ll be bounced back on the Pawtucket express Tuesday to create room for that night’s starting pitcher, whether that be Jon Lester for a season-debut in his hometown, or Devern Hansack, who has been plowing batters since his last demotion. We assume that’s all he’s been plowing, but hey, the guy is from Nicaragua. There’s a lot of fields there, as long as you can avoid the cartels. Maybe he’s found some fields in Rhode Island, too. There are rumors circulating that the team may also be considering David Pauley, who started at Yankee Stadium circa one year ago, but the odds on that seem long since the Sox have already used Hansack in one promotion (the earlier Mike Timlin injury). No need to waste one of Pauley’s options, right Theo? Right?
