Will we get Todd Helton? Nope.

There have been confirmed rumors that we are trying to get our hands on Colo. Rockies Todd Helton in a trade. In exchange, we would be losing Mike Lowell and Julian Tavarez - two of our (once) very good players.  An ESPN.com analyst also mentioned that for us to sway the deal in our favor, we’d also have to throw in Matt Clement - and that the Rockies wanted Jacoby Ellsbury in the deal.

What are my thoughts on this trade? What would it mean? For one, I think Todd is a great player … that goes without saying.  But, he’s getting old, and I dont think it’s in our best interest.  Sure, I think our team would benefit greatly with having Helton join our squad - but, I don’t think that we’ll be ready to trade 3 or 4 of our above-average (which some would say is an understatement) players.

I think it’d be a much smarter move for the Sox to keep our players. We’re doing great together, and I do not want us to break the chemistry. Furthermore, we know how good Jacoby Ellsbury is - but he’s got so much potential that we haven’t even noticed yet. We don’t know for sure how good (or bad?) he’ll be. My bet is that he’s going to be awesome, and I wouldn’t want to throw him away just yet…

I think it’ll be smarter for us to keep our younger players, continue to invest in them, and save them for something else. There’s no need to trade away our players just now. Don’t fix something that isn’t broken. Helton is a great player, but he’s a bonus - and right now, we don’t need that bonus.

What do you guys think?
Bryan
